Nancy Churnin is the theater critic for The Dallas Morning News and the author of the picture books, The William Hoy Story, How a Deaf Baseball Player Changed the Game (Albert Whitman & Company) and Manjhi Moves a Mountain (Fall 2017 from Creston Books). A native New Yorker, she’s a graduate of Harvard University, with a master’s from Columbia University School of Journalism, who is happy to call Dallas her home. Nancy Churnin will talk about the Deaf man who inspired her to write the true story of William Hoy, the 19th-century Deaf baseball player who introduced signals to baseball so that he could play the game he loved. She will talk about how this book heeds the call to offer more books with diverse heroes for our kids. Her next book, Manjhi Moves a Mountain, is another true story about a man in India who moves a mountain for love, using only a hammer, a chisel and his own persistence. She will answer questions and welcome ideas about other forgotten or overlooked heroes that children should know about.
