Drawing from research on a century’s worth of scientists’ answers to this bedeviling question, historian and Associate Professor at Harvard University Sarah Richardson explores what the study of the mystery of effects of the mother on the fetus can reveal about the interaction between gender and scientific ways of knowing in the molecular age.
