Presented by University of Texas at Dallas at UT Dallas Jonsson Performance Hall

omer Collection: “About Love” – Lecture by Honored Photographer Gay Block
Brought to you by the Marilyn and Jerry Comer Collection of Photography.

This year’s honored photographer, Gay Block, will survey her nearly 50-year career as a photographer, to include the early portraits of her affluent Jewish community in Houston as well as her highly successful Rescuers series, the latter of which was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1992 and contains portraits of men and women who risked their lives to aid Jews in their escape from Nazis during the holocaust. Block’s images, most of which are contained in her monograph, About Love, are intimate, compassionate, and simultaneously objective, allowing viewers, and the photographer herself, to easily connect with her subjects. Block explains the title as such: “Through photography, I have learned about love. I hadn’t learned about it at home or in school… I couldn’t have learned about love without photography, and I’m still learning.”

Block’s early Houston portraits and works from her Rescuers series can be seen in the exhibition, Crafting Cultural Hybridity, curated by PhD student Jessica Ingle, and on view in the SP/N Gallery from March 26 – April 24, 2021. This exhibition, which displays Block’s works alongside a selection of photographs from the Comer Collection, explores ideas of identity in marginalized individuals and communities and how photographers negotiate their relationship with said communities as either insider or interpreter.
