Composed Perception: Landscape as Aesthetic Process

Curated by PhD graduate student, Amanda Dunbar, this exhibition of contemporary landscape photography contains selections from the Comer Collection of Photography. The exhibition aims to explore the relationship of the human being to the earth, while also examining how the landscapes inhabited are socially, culturally and aesthetically composed.

Anna Fritzel, PhD Candidate: Frozen

Frozen contemplates the dormant potential of women historically, particularly the female experience over the past 200 years within the context of American Exceptionalism.

Elmira Bagherzadeh, MFA Exhibition: Contemporary Farr(ah)

“My work is about the personal struggle and desire for peace and unity, with a focus on the contrast between a chaotic state of mind and the tranquility sought through mindfulness and meditation practices. I combine traditional art with computing technologies to explore the difference in moments of feeling detached versus moments of feeling connected.

The works in my installation are made by using invisible ink, blacklight LEDs, acrylics, and computing technologies. Invisible in the daylight, the drawings come to life in the dark, visible as animations through flashes of blacklight LEDs. The darkness of the room mimics the subconscious, while the light discloses actions formed in the conscious mind. The movements in these multi layered, time-based installations assist me in comprehending the existence and validity of life’s ephemeral moments.”

Ryan Christopher Brown, Capstone: An Artistic Perspective of an Autistic Life

“Visual art is my main source of communication and expression. As a mildly Autistic person it can sometimes be difficult for me to communicate. When spoken words aren’t enough for people to understand me, I turn anything I can touch and manipulate into my voice. Art is a platform for me to express my opinions on current cultural and societal issues, particularly the importance of mental health.

I work in painting, drawing sculpting, and graphic design. My style is primarily minimalist, but I also create abstract and surrealist art.”
